In Basel-Stadt, removing interior partition walls and making openings between living rooms require neither a permit nor a notification (§ 14 ABPV). More extensive changes to the floor plan and loft conversions go through the simplified building permit procedure (vereinfachtes Baubewilligungsverfahren, § 12 ABPV). The responsible office is the Bau- und Gastgewerbeinspektorat (building and hospitality inspectorate). Additional requirements apply to registered monuments and in the protection or conservation zone (Schutz- oder Schonzone). In every case, a structural engineer first clarifies whether a wall is load-bearing.
