Bathtub restoration in Zurich.

Chips in the enamel, a dull or discoloured surface, leaking joints — or a wish for a shower instead of the tub. We look at your bathtub and tell you what makes sense: repair, recoat, replace or convert to a shower. In Zurich, Dübendorf and the whole surrounding area, with travel included.

Three firm commitments.

Inspect first, then decide

Our chief engineer checks the tub, joints, drain, connections and the tiles around it. We then tell you whether a repair is enough, whether recoating is worthwhile or whether a replacement or a shower is the better solution — and why.

Fixed price within 48 hours

After the site visit you receive the fixed-price quote within 48 hours, item by item, with labour and materials shown separately. Small jobs have a minimum of 3 hours.

Everything around the tub

Tub, pipework, waterproofing, tiles and silicone joints come from one company. We pressure and leak test new pipes and give you the report. 5-year warranty from acceptance.

Repair, recoat or replace.

A bathtub does not have to go just because it no longer looks good. Which solution fits depends on the material of the tub, the type and size of the damage and the condition of everything around it. Individual chips or scratches can often be repaired locally. If the surface as a whole is dull, rough or discoloured, recoating the tub is an option. If the tub is damaged, no longer suits the bathroom or has become too high to step into, we replace it — with a new tub or with a shower. We look beyond the tub itself: if silicone joints leak, tiles sound hollow or the drain and connections are old, that belongs in the same quote. Which option makes sense for you is something we tell you after the site visit; on request we price two options side by side.

Does a new tub or shower need a permit?

As a rule, no. Under § 1(g) of the cantonal Building Procedure Ordinance (Bauverfahrensverordnung, BVV), ‘equipment of minor importance under building law that is not visible from outside, such as lighting, bath, washing and toilet facilities, water and electricity connections’ does not require a building permit (Baubewilligung) in building zones. This applies throughout the canton of Zurich — in the city of Zurich as well as in Dübendorf, Dietikon or Uster. The exemption does not release you from complying with the other regulations (§ 2(2) BVV). A permit becomes necessary when more is changed — for example a change of use or a structural alteration to the building (§ 309(1) of the Planning and Building Act, PBG). We clarify your case before work starts and confirm the result in writing.

What it costs.

For repairing or recoating a tub we give the price after the site visit. It depends on the material and size of the tub, the number and size of the damaged areas and the condition of the joints and connections. For replacement our unit prices apply, labour only, excluding VAT: fitting a bathtub CHF 350, shower or shower tray CHF 320 to 420, shower enclosure CHF 280. If the tub is replaced by a shower, removing tiles (CHF 32 to 40 per m²), waterproofing the wet area (CHF 28 to 40 per m²) and new wall tiles (CHF 62 to 85 per m²) are usually added. The tub, shower, tiles and other materials come on top. In Zurich and the surrounding area — Dübendorf, Dietikon, Uster, Wetzikon, Horgen, Schlieren — travel is included. Frequently asked questions.

What we are asked most often before a bathtub restoration.

Is repairing or recoating worth it instead of a new tub?

It can be, if the tub is otherwise sound and suits the bathroom: the tiles, joints and connections then stay untouched. If the tub is damaged, too high to step into, or the tiles and pipes are due for renewal anyway, a replacement or a shower is usually the better solution. We tell you what makes sense for your tub after the site visit; on request we price both options.

What does bathtub restoration cost?

For repair and recoating we give the price after the site visit, because the material, size and damage of tubs vary widely. For replacement, unit prices for the labour apply: fitting a bathtub CHF 350, shower or shower tray CHF 320 to 420, shower enclosure CHF 280 — excluding VAT, materials separate. You receive the fixed-price quote within 48 hours of the site visit.

What does converting a bathtub to a shower cost?

That depends on how much around the tub needs renewing. On top of fitting the shower or shower tray (CHF 320 to 420) and, if needed, a shower enclosure (CHF 280), there is usually removing tiles (CHF 32 to 40 per m²), waterproofing the wet area (CHF 28 to 40 per m²) and new wall tiles (CHF 62 to 85 per m²). If pipes have to be moved, we charge CHF 55 to 70 per running metre including a pressure test. If the whole bathroom is renewed, a complete bathroom renovation costs CHF 8'500 to 19'000 for the labour.

Do you also work in Dübendorf?

Yes. For us, Dübendorf is part of the surrounding area — travel is included, as in Zurich, Dietikon, Uster, Wetzikon, Horgen and Schlieren. It is about 20 minutes from our base in Zurich-Altstetten. If more than the tub is to be renewed, you will find the process and guide prices on our page on bathroom renovation in Dübendorf.

Does a new tub need a permit?

As a rule, no. Under § 1(g) BVV, bath, washing and toilet facilities and water and electricity connections that are not visible from outside do not need a building permit in the building zone. This applies throughout the canton of Zurich, including Dübendorf. If more is changed, we check whether a permit is needed before work starts.

Bathtub in a rented flat: what lifespan applies?

The joint lifespan table (paritätische Lebensdauertabelle) of the tenants’ association and the homeowners’ association (tenants’ association excerpt, 2021 edition) gives 25 years for acrylic bathtubs and shower trays, 35 years for enamelled steel and 20 years for re-enamelling. In the event of damage, the tenant is only liable for the part that has not yet been written off. So keep a record of when the tub was fitted or last re-enamelled.
